Mission Miracles

This "Mission Miracles" donation is designed to give money to those who are on a sanctioned mission through a church or organization such as Samaritan's Purse or Habitat for Humanity. The donation will be used during the mission where  a Mission Miracle is needed. This is the story that inspired this donation.

January, 2008 saw civil unrest in Kenya, Africa with killings and destruction of businesses and homes.

A mission had been planned by a church to go to Kenya to build a community church for the village of Suswa. Due to the unrest, the mission had to be postponed and a later date in March was selected. A group of 13 people from the church under the leadership of  the Pastor, left for Africa with their tools, blessings and enthusiasm. Here they met up with their Kenyan group leader and interpreter who organizes these missions.

Upon arrival, the group was informed that a woman had contacted the interpreter about buying some 60 lb. bags of rice she had. The pastor conferred with the group and it was decided to buy the rice not knowing in what way it would be used. They trusted the Lord that a need would arise. They also bought a few extra bags along the way giving them 6, 60lb bags in total.

On their way to their destination the first day, they stumbled upon a small village where a displaced person’s camp was located. These people had been driven from their village by another stronger tribe seeking power by killing and destroying homes and businesses. The displaced people had fled their original area then came back to this small village where the church set up a camp in the yard. They were living in some cardboard shelters, plastic covers and using rags for blankets. Food was scarce. The camp consisted of women, children and a few old men, perhaps 20 - 30 people in all.

Not knowing the situation, the interpreter talked to the village pastor. It was discovered that more people had been in the camp earlier but because the food had run out, a large part of the group left. The church had no money and there had been no help from the Western world here. The village pastor called the remaining people together to say the mission group had rice. They came back with bowls and the pastor distributed the rice depending on how many were in a family. During the distribution, there was a small amount of spillage. One old man picked up every single grain of rice from the ground and put it in his pockets.

One woman stood to speak for the group through the interpreter. She said they had given thanks to the Lord for looking after them and had been praying for food. She continued to say her family had owned a store/hotel in one of the villages and during the riots, her husband was killed and the business burned. As she left with her children, she recalled seeing dead bodies lying in the ditches and body parts in plastic bags strewn along the way…a gruesome sight for anyone.

Receiving the rice had been an answer to prayer and the women and children hugged the mission members and thanked them. A prayer of thanks was spoken by all, the people for the food and the Lord for leading the mission group where it was needed. It was a Mission Miracle.

We at Travel and Luggage Solutions were deeply touched by this story and feel compelled to help the world where a crisis jeopardizes human dignities. Our pledge is to contribute $1.00 from each sale on our website to these missions. It is our way of … Giving Back!
